Why Innovation Matters

Innovation is a crucial factor in advancing society forward. The concept of difference-in-degree and difference-in-kind illustrates the two forms of innovation. Difference-in-degree involves incremental improvements to existing technologies, whereas difference-in-kind is a complete transformation of the status quo. The latter, also known as disruptive innovation, can completely revolutionize an industry or society. On the other hand, developmental innovation builds on existing technologies and enhances them incrementally. Both types of innovation are important and play a crucial role in shaping the world as we know it.

Innovation is crucial in creating a better world, where designers create new possibilities that help humanity flourish. Designers who are dedicated to creating innovative environments, products, and services are able to uplift the quality of life for communities and individuals alike. By continuously pursuing innovation, designers can identify ways to meet unmet needs and improve current solutions. This creates a win-win situation for both designers and their clients alike.

Innovation also pushes beyond technological limitations, creating unexpected outcomes. It is a crucial factor in exploring new possibilities and solving unprecedented problems. In a world where technology is rapidly advancing, it is necessary to stay ahead of the curve. Innovation provides an avenue to break through boundaries and find new solutions to existing problems. It is important to promote a culture of innovation, where designers receive the resources and encouragement they need to create architecture that positively impacts society.

Finding the Opportunity Gap

Innovative design involves finding new trajectories and goals to push towards, but it is not always easy to know where those paths will lead. One strategy is to focus on identifying the opportunity gap – the space between current reality and the unmet needs or desires of users. This approach asks designers to look at the world in terms of what is not working well or what could be improved upon, rather than just starting with an idea and trying to make it work. By researching and observing how people interact with products or spaces, designers can identify areas where there is room for improvement and innovation.

Once the opportunity gap has been identified, designers can use backcasting to work backwards from that improved vision of the future and figure out the steps needed to get there. This method involves starting with a desired end state and then figuring out the necessary steps to achieve it. By doing this, designers can reverse-engineer innovative ideas that pioneer new paths that quantum leap quality of life. Backcasting helps ensure that design goals are met, and aligned with the needs of project stakeholders and society at large. By focusing on identifying the opportunity gap, designers can create meaningful solutions that push the boundaries of what we currently perceive as possible.

Innovate Design Experience

The design of architecture can play a pivotal role in creating interactions that are user-centric and capable of delivering an innovative experience. The process of designing architecture in this way involves a deep understanding of the end-user's needs and preferences, as well as an ability to integrate these requirements into the final environment, product, or service. It is about creating a harmonious balance between form, function, and meaning, so that every part of the design contributes to the overall user experience.

In order to innovate design experience, architects must consider the entire user journey - from the first interaction with the design to the final outcome. They need to ask questions as: What is the user's goal? What frustrations are they experiencing? How can we make the experience more intuitive and seamless? What will help the building occupant to get to their goal in ways that transform their life for the better? The architectural design must be aligned with these insights to ultimately create architecture that is human-centered design. To accomplish this, it is important to engage in "out-of-the-box" design thinking that leverages the human-centered approach to architectural design. 

By honing one's design innovation process, it becomes possible to create new kinds of environments that push beyond status quo buildings, to build architecture that leads at the frontiers of design. To do this, it is important to bring your idea from concept into futurepacing realms by simply imagining your building design in a deeper future: including its materials, its surrounding context, and the experience it creates. Then imagine what further design development is needed to create design features that disrupt and solve for the design challenges faced today. Any decision made during these early design thinking phases can serve as a backcasting trajectory that helps to shape a subpar building into a wonderous innovative design. Over time, an innovative design thinking process will emerge that advances and evolves one's design innovation skills. As an architect, the overarching key is to create an increasingly better amazing experience for building occupants, so each comprehensive idea for a building project is better that the last. Ultimately, our goal as a humanity is to live in a future where architecture is synonymous with excellent experience derived from actual design thinking methods that create not only effective solutions for a given problem, but also create transformational journeys that boost how we live as a humanity.
