Program Notes

Wonder in C Major is a sweeping, 52-piece orchestral composition that serves as a musical portrait of the human journey. Synched to an evocative film, the music tracks the pilgrimage of a single individual—from a curious boy into a thoughtful elderly man. At its core, the piece explores a universal truth: humanity’s ultimate superpower is our ability to ask profound questions. The score is driven by a persistent, low rhythmic motor that pushes the music forward continuously across time. Above this driving pulse, interweaving melodic lines repeat and vary in structure. This represents the maturing path of human questioning. As the individual grows, the questions evolve from the simple wonder of a boy ("Why is the sky blue?") to the ambitious reach of a teen ("What if I become an astronaut?"), the mature reflection of an adult ("Will this help humanity?"), and the poignant vulnerability of old age ("What remains?"). Throughout the piece, different instrument families take turns passing the melody. In these heartfelt moments, the listener can feel the emotional courage required to ask life's defining questions. This is most prominent during a delicate section where a solo voice asks, "Will you marry me?" Ultimately, the composition reflects that the journey of inquiry is what makes us human, celebrating our shared capacity for wonder.
